palmOne has released an update for the SprintPCS version of the Treo 650. The update includes a several improvements including more efficient memory management. Many users are baffled as to why there is still no Dial-Up Networking for the device.
Many will remember the news that the new Treo 650 did not manage memory as efficiently as previous Palm devices. The problem was the result of the way palmOne's latest devices allocate memory. Apparently, previous Palm OS models were more efficient about storing data. If a database entry was only 15 bytes long, it took up 15 bytes of memory. On the new Treo 650 the minimum size for a database entry is 512 bytes. This means that the 15-byte entry will actually take up a full 512 bytes of the Treo memory.
The ROM updater fixes this memory problem and also includes the following enhancements:
Overall voice quality improvements, including fix for voice "choppiness" some Sprint PCS customers experienced
Internal setting modification to allow correct access to Sprint Affiliate roaming partner networks (previously released as Sprint PCS Treo 650 Roaming Patch)
Non-Volatile File System improvements that optimize memory handling and free up more memory
TTY (also known as TDD or Text Telephone) optimizations and improvements
Optimizations for data calls
Includes VersaMail 3.0c which provides greater stability and improvements
Bluetooth Carkit drivers are now included in ROM (previously released as Carkit Update for Treo 650)
