The HP TouchPad is finally official today. If you're in the market for one go out and have a ball. I'm sorry to say that I won't get buying a TouchPad.
I've been a fan of webOS since it was announced at CES a few years ago. I couldn't wait to get my hands on a Pre. When I finally got my Pre I was impressed with the OS, but the hardware was seriously lacking. webOS is promising in so many ways. The OS really disappears once you get the gestures down. You don't use your finger as a mouse (like you do in iOS an Android), pointing at "Back" and "Save" buttons. You simply swipe to move around the OS. It's fantastic!
After the Pre I picked up the Pre 2 and eventually returned it. The Pre 2 was the worst piece of junk I've ever purchased and I wrote about it here.
HP announced the Pre 3 and TouchPad several months ago and I was excited to see what they would come up with. The TouchPad looks okay, but that's the problem. It's just "okay." I have to admit that Apple has pushed the bar up so high there is just no reason to get a TouchPad. It's bigger, thicker, heavier, and doesn't have nearly as many apps. So why should I get it again?
Sure, the TouchPad will have that fantastic webOS, but is that enough of a reason to spend the same amount of money that I could spend on an iPad 2? Sure, HP will improve the TouchPad and maybe they'll catch up with Apple. If that happens, I'll get one. If they even come remotely close, I'll get one. Until then, I'm done wasting my time with wannabes.
After the Pre 2 I finally had to come to grips with the fact that no matter how promising webOS was, it's just not worth the frustration, or the money. Until they come out with a better product I'm sticking with what works.
I hope HP gets their act together and really develops a strong competitor to the iPad. I hope that a year from now they will have a tablet and phone that are really in the elite class of devices. However, until that happens I'm stuck using my iPhone and iPad 2. iOS isn't as impressive as webOS, but it has the support of thousands of developers and it's just the best thing out there at this point.
What do you think? Is the TouchPad worth the same price as the iPad 2? Let me know in the comments.
