Handspring has announced that it will hook up with global wireless operator Orange SA to produce smartphones for Orange's customers in Europe. During a time where Handpsring seems to be on its last leg, this agreement may be the only positive note for Handspring. The two companies will coordinate the development of converged voice/data hardware and software specifically designed for Orange's wireless networks throughout Europe.
By customizing its applications and user interface for Orange, Handspring hopes to get a leg up on the emerging smartphone market in Europe.
Handspring has essentially abandoned the PDA in favor of the Treo, a combined PDA/Phone. The company now says it will announce a new smartphone in a few months and its release should be in the fall. This will be the second major turn for Handspring. They left the Visor in favor of the Treo, and the will apparently now introduce a new line of smartphones.
