The Pocket PC OS is gaining momentum, according to last years statistics the Pocket PC had roughly 16% of the market. The Pocket PC OS share is expected to increase with the upcoming release of Pocket PCs by ViewSonic and Dell. Both of these manufacturers have committed to releasing Pocket PCs at a low price point, eroding one of the major selling points for a Palm OS device.
In the US, which accounts for roughly half of the world wide market the Palm OS continues to dominate. The popularity of the Sony Clie devices, which run the Palm OS, is helping to bolster sales of Palm OS devices.
The fourth quarter promises to be a very exciting quarter. All of the device manufacturers are clamoring for a piece of the holiday purchasing pie and each platform has a few items of interest to woo consumers. For the Palm OS it's going to be the new Tungsten line of handhelds, and the Sony Clie NX series. The Pocket PC OS is seeing a good amount of sales with its Pocket PC Phone Edition devices and the new entry-level pricing on the Dell and ViewSonic Pocket PCs should make for a nice bargain.
